There are over 120 species of Opuntia, the most famous being the Mexican nopal, the Madagascan racket and the Mediterranean prickly pear, for which Morocco is the land of choice.
This prickly pear is of Mexican origin. It was the Spanish who introduced it to Europe in the 16th century, with planting subsequently taking place in North Africa in regions with light, sandy, siliceous soil.
One of the “fat” plants, the prickly pear can grow to several meters in height and resembles a cactus with its flattened stems, cylindrical, glazed, deciduous leaves and spiny clusters of prickles known as glochidia.
Its spectacular yellow, bisexual flowers are arranged in aureoles on the margins of the plant’s terminal articles.
The fruit is a fleshy, ovoid, reddish berry containing numerous seeds, often called “pips”, from which a precious oil is extracted for its dermatological uses.
In Morocco, prickly pears are harvested by hand and peeled to separate the seeds.
Secondly, the oil is produced by hand, mechanically, simply by cold pressing the seeds, which is why it is called “virgin”, like our natural olive oil, for example.

Composition

Essential polyunsaturated fatty acids (oleic, linoleic), saturated fatty acid (palmitic), vitamin E in the form of alpha-tocopherol, sterols (campesterol, stigmasterol, sitosterol).

A little botany:

Verbena essential oil is not obtained from the Verbena variety (Verbena officinalis), whose leaves are used to make delicious infusions, but from the “exotic verbena” variety (Litsea cubeba).

This bushy shrub can grow up to 2 meters high, and is the pride of Moroccan aromatherapy for its sublime fragrance.

Organic Sweet Orange Essential Oil

The sweet orange (Citrus sinensis) belongs to the large botanical family of the Citrus genus, which includes the bitter orange (Citrus aurantium).
They are all of Asian origin (China, Japan, Burma, Indonesia). The suffix sinensis, evoking China, attached to the sweet orange, is unequivocal on this subject.

And it was Portuguese sailors in the 16th century who brought back these citrus fruits, whose cultivation then spread to all the countries around the Mediterranean.
As far as my home country, Morocco, is concerned, the citrus industry is of great importance. Over 120,000 hectares are cultivated, producing an average of 2.5 million tonnes of citrus fruit, mainly oranges.

Orange trees grown for sweet orange production can reach 10 meters in height, but they need to be pruned to reduce their size and make it easier to harvest the fruit.
The leaves of these orange trees are evergreen, shiny and waxy in appearance, and pinkish-white in color.
It’s the fruit’s peel that’s used to make the essential oil (a misnomer, in fact, for citrus fruits, for which we speak of essence, as the peel is not distilled but simply pressed to extract the oil it contains).

It takes around 100 kilos of (dried) sweet orange peel to obtain 400 grams of organic sweet orange essential oil/essence.

The word “zest” is often used for this peel, which corresponds to the pericarp surrounding the orange.

Organic shea butter

A little history:

Shea (Butyrospermum parkii) is a stubby, deciduous African tree growing up to 15 m tall.
Its foliage is dark green, its flowers white and melliferous.
Known as shea “nuts”, they are brown ovoid drupes 5 to 10 cm long, weighing around 50 grams.

Harvest time:

This fleshy, edible fruit contains a large, whitish-colored kernel whose pulp is rich in fatty substances, the famous shea “butter” so highly prized in cosmetics.
It is the women who harvest the nuts once they have fallen to the ground and reached maturity.
The women then proceed to pulping, removing the mesocarp from the nuts. The nuts are then washed and dried in the sun.
The women then crush the nuts to release the almonds, which are roasted and crushed to a paste, then churned and kneaded by hand.

An exceptional composition:

Shea butter contains: fatty acids (oleic, linoleic, stearic, palmitic), fatty acid esters, phytosterols (karisterol, spinasterol, stigmasterol), karitene-rich latex, tocopherol (vitamin E), carotenoids.

Pure beeswax

Beeswax (scientifically named cera alba) has been used since ancient times for its many properties. To cite just one ancient therapeutic use, in Roman times it was applied directly to the skin to help heal wounds, the wax having the ability to accelerate healing.

This wax comes from the secretion of the bees’ wax glands located between the rings of their abdomen, from a transformation of nectar. The wax exudes and solidifies into scales, which the bee detaches with the claws of its hind legs. The bee then triturates and kneads the wax with its mandibles before using it.

This wax has two uses. Firstly, the capping (closing) of the brood cells and the storehouse for food, honey and pollen. Closing a cell is a considerable task, which can take up to 6 hours. Secondly, the construction of the hive’s combs. Rémy Chauvin talks of “magic”.

Building a comb is an eminent social act, symbolizing the solidarity and complementarity of bees. Clinging to each other by their legs, bees form veritable bridges.
With phenomenal dexterity, in the darkness of the hive, the bees shape the cells with admirable regularity.

It’s true that the geometric constructions of the hive obey perfect geometric laws. A spoke is made up of two rows of hexagonal cells placed back to back, in parallel series, with each spoke at a precise distance from its neighbor.

Tribute to Galen’s cerat

It was Galen, the legendary Greek physician, who came up with the idea of combining beeswax with other elements to make a preparation with a certain consistency, conferred by the wax, but fluid enough to be used externally, a preparation known as “cerat”.
Galen’s cerate is reputed to have several indications: it calms skin irritations, accelerates wound healing, soothes burns and relieves rheumatic pain.

Its original formula is as follows: beeswax 8, sweet almond oil 55, rose water 16, whiting 16 g, rose essence 11 drops.
Since whaling was banned in 1982, this traditional Galen cerat formula has been modified. The current “French National Formulary”, our pharmacopoeia, indicates this composition: beeswax 13 g, sweet almond oil 53.50 g, borax 0.50 g, rosewater 33 g.
The famous “Cold cream” is none other than Galen’s cerate enriched with tincture of benzoin […].

Beeswax is invaluable in natural cosmetics, as it is an excellent emulsifier that makes emulsions possible and stable, i.e. the theoretically impossible mixing of a fatty substance and water (for a beauty cream we say “oily phase” and “aqueous phase”).
It has virtues other than its emulsifying function. It is a texturizing agent that thickens the products in which it is incorporated. It thickens them. And that’s not all: it gives preparations a softer texture and improves their creaminess.

As an emollient, it makes skin softer and more supple. It also has a film-forming action that protects the skin from environmental aggressions.
It contributes to the normalization of its pH, has purifying virtues and a healing function.

In ancient times, the Egyptians used it, along with essential oils, in their mummification process. Its purifying and antiseptic properties ensured that the body was perfectly preserved.

Clay is a sedimentary rock composed of hydrated alumina silicates derived from the decomposition of rocks by erosion, feldspars, sand and limestone.
There are many varieties of clay, distinguished by their color: white, black, yellow, gray, red, brown, blue, green.

Prickly pear powder

Prickly pear powder has much the same virtues as prickly pear oil, but has different, complementary cosmetic uses. It is notably used as an exfoliant, anti-aging and anti-oxidant, anti-free radical, anti-acne, anti-spot, anti-dark circles and softener.

It is also used to produce a precious maceration.

The powder is made from ground prickly pear seeds.

When prickly pear seeds are cold-pressed, a precious regenerating, anti-aging oil is extracted.

The paste obtained after extraction is naturally dried, then ground to obtain the powder. This eco-responsible, biodegradable powder of the highest quality is an all-in-one product natural, organic and 100% pure, with significant residues of prickly pear oil.

Rhassoul powder

Book “Cosmétiques : faites-les vous-même” published by Éditions Bleu Majorelle.

Rhassoul (also known as ghassoul) is a variety of clay whose only deposit on Earth is in Morocco. On the edge of the Middle Atlas mountain range, in the province of Boulemane, south of the Fès region.

In 1936, French geologist Jacques de Lapparent identified the origin of rhassoul. Resulting from the weathering of volcanic rocks dating from the Upper Oligocene, 25 million years ago.
Listed in the classification of brown clays, rhassoul belongs to the smectite group.
Its two main components are silica, in the form of silicon dioxide (around 55% of its mass) and magnesium, in the form of magnesium oxide (around 20% of its mass).

It was then sold in the souks, as part of the ritual care required in hammams. Moroccan women have handed down its uses for skin and hair care from mother to daughter.
In the official INPI list of ingredients used in cosmetics (International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients), it is named MOROCCAN LAVA CLAY. It’s true that the word rhassoul, in Arabic, literally means “earth that washes”.

Rhassoul powder is purifying, cleansing, detoxifying, decongesting, softening and soothing all at once.
These properties also apply to the scalp. Rhassoul is particularly recommended for oily hair and greasy dandruff. It absorbs excess sebum and adds volume to hair.
For skin care, it is active in cases of: oily skin, problem skin, acne, blackheads, impurities.
It’s easy to see why rhassoul has been so successful outside hammams, and is now a popular feature of SPAS and beauty salons in the West.

Organic Rose floral water

There’s a truly magical place in Morocco, on the slopes of the High Atlas mountains. This is the verdant Dades valley, at an altitude of 1,500 meters, whose beauty contrasts with the surrounding ochre mineral landscape.
It has been nicknamed the Valley of Roses. This is where Moroccans lovingly cultivate this uniquely fragrant plant.
And every year in May, when the flowers are in bloom, the inhabitants of Keela M’Gouna and other surrounding villages set off early in the morning, between dawn and dusk, to delicately hand-pick the flowers that will be distilled fresh the same day to obtain rose water, a major ingredient in natural cosmetics.

The species that produces roses for distillation (Rosa damascena) is a very old rose, a cross between Rosa gallica and Rosa phoenicia.
It’s a fairly tall shrub, reaching up to 2 meters. Its stems are armed with branches covered with irregular thorns, the largest scythe-shaped, mixed with bristles. Leaves have 5 to 7 toothed leaflets, smooth above and pubescent below.
The flowers are of course pink, arranged in clumps. The calyx, short, turbinate or conical, is always exposed at the top.
The fruit is ovoid, covered with prickles and containing hairy achenes.
Odorants accumulate in the cells of the petals’ epidermal layer. Aromatic concentration is highest between 6 and 9 am.

Hydrolat

Rose water is a hydrosol obtained by distilling the flowers. It takes place in a still. The process consists in passing water vapor through the flowers, taking on their molecules.
The plant is placed in a vat (now made of stainless steel), which is then placed on top of a boiler. The water in the flowers turns to steam and bursts the plant’s cells, containing the volatile aromatic molecules it picks up during the heating process.
The water vapor containing the aromatic molecules passes through a refrigerated coil, where condensation occurs.
A Florentine vase separates the heavier water from the lighter essential oil, which floats to the surface.
Recovered rose water, loaded with small quantities (less than 5%) of naturally dissolved aromatic molecules, is known as rose “hydrolat”. These hydrolats are beneficial to health and beauty.

Rose essential oil, which is extremely rare, since distilling a ton of fresh flowers produces only… 30 grams of essential oil!
This explains its very high cost. In perfumery, this rose essential oil is “unaffordable”, so we use what we call rose absolute, which is obtained in a different way to classic distillation.

Composition

Applications
