Well known as plant aspirin, the organic white willow bark (Salix alba) has crossed centuries and civilizations. About 500 years before our era, the Chinese knew its analgesic properties. The ancient Greeks used it to lower fever and relieve pain. From Florida to Alaska, willow bark has been (and still is) used by Native Americans as a painkiller and as a febrifuge.
In 1828 Pierre-Joseph Leroux, a French chemist, isolated the main active substance from the white willow bark: salicin. It is salicin, transformed by the body into salicylic acid, which gives the plant its anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties.
His discovery is at the origin of the synthesis of this substance, patented under the name of aspirin. The white willow bark is still appreciated for its salicylate compounds with the same properties as aspirin, with fewer digestive side effects.
This medicinal plant is recommended to relieve many pains, especially articulations, resulting from osteoarthritis and rheumatism. The white willow can also be used to relieve headaches, painful periods or a feverish condition. The European Medicines Agency (EMA) recognizes as “clinically well established” the use of white willow bark in “Short-term treatment of low back pain”, and its traditional use against “minor articulation pain, cold fever and headaches”.
